Angevine Ascent Introduction

There are certain things that successful students do in order to be more consistently successful. There is no magic to it. In Ascent we present techniques, skills and knowledge that will help you be a better student. In this lesson, students get an overview of the ascent program.

Organization I - Binder

Not only does organization keep you on track so that you can earn the grades you deserve, it prepares you for the working world, where organizational skills are a requirement in jobs.

Cornell Notes - How and Why

At Angevine students use the Cornell Notes system, used around the world. It is a proven focused note-taking method. When used correctly, students will increase their knowledge and understanding, and raise their grades in any given class! In this lesson, students learn the correct way to take Cornell Notes.

Working Together

One of the main advantages of working with others is that you can benefit from the skills of others that you may not have yourself, and share your own skills.

Code Switching I - Behavior

When we do things in our lives, we want to be effective. The behaviors we choose can help us do those things better...

or the behaviors we choose can get in the way, or create barriers.

How Grades Work

Grades are earned not given by a teacher. They are a way of getting feedback about your learning and progress. However some students do not even understand how grades are calculated, or what they mean. In this lesson students get a clear picture of what grades mean in school.

How to do a Grade Check

Keeping track of your learning and your progress is important to do in school. Part of doing this is keeping track of your grades in your classes. Fortunately we have Infinite Campus that helps students find their grades. In this lesson students learn how to use the Angevine Grade Tracking System as one tool to see their progress in the moment and over time.

How to do a Binder Check

Staying organized in school is an important part of truly being successful. The binder is a central component that requires a system and regular maintenance. In this lesson, students learn how to use the Angevine Binder Check Tracker to help maintain a binder that will support their learning rather than being just a prop for looking successful.

Paying Attention

Paying attention in our busy world is not always easy. School is no exception. In this lesson, students are shown the connection between "paying attention", and learning. In addition, how attention works in the brain, and strategies on how to improve your attention.

Organization II - Time Management

We can’t change or alter time ‐ every day has the same number of hours, every hour the same number of minutes. How you use your time has a major impact on your academic accomplishments, satisfaction, and levels of stress. In this lesson, students learn about why time management is important in school and in life, and some of the strategies and techniques that can be used in order to be successful in school.

Question in Answer Technique

We live in a world of acronyms, texting, usernames and passwords where we are encouraged to be either short and sweet or cryptic in our communication. In this lesson, students learn the Question in Answer or "Q in A" is a technique for writing a full/complete sentence when you answer a question.

Claim, Evidence and Reasoning Always Together

In our world, we are often asked to back-up our statements or conclusions with rational evidence. When we can't do this, our claims often go nowhere. In this lesson, students learn about the system of Claim, Evidence and Reasoning (CER). When students are asked questions that require them to think deeply about what they have observed, read, and experienced, CER helps them integrate that information as they explain the how or why for a specific purpose and audience. This becomes an attitude and begins to happen in all classes, and hopefully outside of class in the world as well.

Claim, Evidence and Reasoning II

Here students get some practice applying what they have learned about CER in some activities designed for that purpose.

Plagiarism and Citation

In our times, when everything we could ever want is at the push of a button on the internet. More than ever before, it is a temptation for students to "borrow" or copy the writing and ideas of others. In this lesson, we explore this idea of "Original" vs "Unoriginal",  what constitutes plagiarism - the different styles iterations, and how to avoid this slippery slope.

How to Highlight

Highlighting can be a powerful tool for understanding text and for studying if used correctly. It can also be a waste of time, and a way of making yourself feel like you are learning something. In this lesson, students learn some basic guidelines about successfully using highlighting in for learning.

Code Switching II - Language

The use of language has different modes or codes. Many times students miss cues to switch between these different ways of using language. In this lesson, students learn about the differences between informal, semi-formal, and formal/academic language. They learn how to figure out when it is appropriate to use certain language and when it is important to "switch codes" in order to meet the language expectations of a certain setting.

Cornell Notes - Refresher

Students sometimes need a reminder in how to do a certain school skill. In this lesson, we give students a reminder of the specific techniques and the rational behind taking good Cornell notes for success in learning.

Raising Awareness/ Reflection / Reality Checks

Weekly Planner Suite

Planner Suite includes a digital and analog version of a weekly schedule, important Angevine dates, and a year of mini calendars all in one document. Just make a copy and start planning!

Paper Grade Check Sheet

Using this sheet helps track academic performance.  The first side of the sheet is a reality check.  There is a place to indicate grades in each class, there is also a way to link common barriers to classroom performance with the grade; missing work, low test scores, off-task behavior. The second side of the sheet is for reflection and "planning for success". This includes a place to identify something that is going well in school. Then a place to identify something to do to improve grades, behavior or attitude in school. Finally, students are asked to share results with their parents. There is a place for parents to sign, date and comment if they so wish.

Online Grade/GPA Tracking

With this tracking sheet, students keep track of their biweekly GPA over the course of each semester.  There is also a graph that will visually track GPA over the course of the year. Make a copy, and you are on your way.

Online Grade/GPA Tracking (Demo - Version)

This is a demonstration version in order to show students what the "Student Electronic Grade/GPA Tracking Sheet" will look like once it is filled out.

Online Binder Check Tracking

This is a tool for students to quantify the maintenance of a workable school binder system.  Using this sheet, students can keep track of both materials/supplies and organization. The sheet is designed to help raise awareness, and promote reflection.

The Memory Pathway I - Encoding

Memory is the ability to acquire, store and recall information, skills, dialogue, faces, names etc.  Our experiences would confusing without our ability to remember.  In this lesson, we will learn about the first stage of the learning pathway, encoding.

The Memory Pathway II - Storage

The study of the storage of memory is fascinating science. For most of us, they are not like a book you can pull off a shelf to read again as needed in their exact original form. It is a little more complicated and interesting, as you will see. In this lesson, we explore the how we hold onto memories.

The Memory Pathway III - Retrieval / Recall: Lesson I

Memories are not frozen in time like a photograph, or a painting, they are mixed with our awareness of the current situation. Memory retrieval requires re-visiting the actual nerve pathways the brain formed when encoding the memory. In this lesson, we explore how we explore how memories make their way back out of where they have been stored.

The Memory Pathway IV - Retrieval / Recall: Lesson II

Are they as accurate as we expect them to be? In this lesson, we continue our exploration of how those memories we have stored make their way back out. We look at the differences between recognition and recall.

Memory Practice: The Concentration Game

In this classic game, students practice the memory pathway by using recognition and recall in a fun engaging activity.

The Memory Pathway V - Types of Long-term Memory

Not all memory is the same

Memorization vs Understanding - Beyond Memorization

There is a difference between memorizing something and actually understanding it. In this lesson we explore why it is important to know the difference.

Memory Practice - How to Use Memory to your Advantage in the Classroom

How does all of our understanding of how memory works translate into something useful in the classroom and for learning in general?  In this lesson, we get time to try out our memories, and see how well we do.

Learning I - The Four Stages of Learning

We learn something new every day though we may not always be aware of it.  When we are learning something new it sometimes can be frustrating.  We can cut down that frustration if we understand the stages we go through when we learn something new. In this lesson, we begin to explore the process of learning. This will continue in 8th grade, but here we see that there are in fact different stages to the learning process.

Learning II - Learning: What is it?

Just like a chef becomes an expert in using the different ingredients for different culinary creations, learners become an expert in using memory. In this lesson, we begin to explore what learning really is.

Reflection Letter - Looking Forward / Looking Back

A lot can happen in a year, especially in middle school. In this activity, students get a chance to look back over their year and write a letter to themselves. In this letter, which they will read in the fall, the will reflect on what went well, interesting things that happened, things they learned etc.

How to be a Whole Person - It's not just our brains...

E.I. or Emotional Intelligence is becoming aware of, understanding, and regulating feelings. It is also about the ability to reason and solve problems based on the emotions we experience. In this lesson students explore how to access their ability to be emotionally intelligent by being aware of these aspects personally and with others.

How to be a Whole Person - Be Emotionally Intelligent

Being self-aware is an important part of growing up.  In this lesson we investigate how we feel, and identifying five main emotions that help us be a whole person.

How to be a Whole Person - Working with Strong Emotions and Mindfulness

More on Emotional Intelligence. Learn how to work with strong emotions, and begin to understand what it means to be mindful.

How to Deal with Conflict

Conflict comes up no matter what we do, it is a normal part of life. Avoiding it only makes it worse. In this lesson, students explore they deal with conflict. Their habits, where they come from. Students have a chance to evaluate, and discuss ways of dealing with conflict.
